Mycotoxins in maize and meal cost money
Mycotoxins are harmful substances produced by moulds on grain and feed — in the field, during harvest and in storage. Even at low concentrations they act invisibly: they suppress immunity, damage the liver and gastrointestinal tract, impair reproduction and reduce feed intake. Animals fall ill more easily, grow more slowly, give less milk or fewer eggs — and veterinary costs rise.
The toxin binder binds and neutralises these toxins before they are absorbed by the animal, protecting the health and productivity of the herd.
Less output from the same amount of feed
More frequent illness, higher veterinary costs
A drop in fertility and in rearing the young
Rejected products, treatment, wasted feed
What does this mean for your herd?
Each species faces different risks. Choose your profile:
Main mycotoxins in poultry: aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, T-2/HT-2, DON, zearalenone, fumonisins
- Poorer feed conversion and slowed growth in broilers
- Suppressed immunity and impaired gut health
- A drop in egg-laying and hatchability in layers and breeders
Main mycotoxins in pigs: zearalenone, DON, aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, T-2/HT-2
- Reproductive problems from zearalenone, especially in sows
- Feed refusal and vomiting at high DON levels
- Reduced feed intake and suppressed immunity
Main mycotoxins in ruminants: aflatoxin B1 → aflatoxin M1 in milk, DON, zearalenone, ochratoxin, fumonisins, ergot alkaloids
- Aflatoxin M1 in milk — a regulated residue leading to milk rejection
- Liver damage and a drop in milk yield
- Impaired reproduction and herd immunity
Aflatoxin M1 in milk — a current problem
When dairy cows consume feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1, the toxin passes into milk as aflatoxin M1 — a regulated residue with an EU statutory limit of 0.05 µg/kg. Exceeding it leads to rejection of the entire tanker load. Adisseo's toxin binders bind the aflatoxin in the gastrointestinal tract and limit its transfer into milk, protecting the quality and market value of the output.
The products in detail
Toxy-Nil®
Reliable protection against moderate mycotoxin contamination
Toxy-Nil® is a reliable and economical solution at moderate contamination levels. It works by adsorption — binding the toxins to a sequestering mineral matrix and inactivated yeast, so that they are excreted without being absorbed. In a field trial in broilers with naturally contaminated feed (AFB1, DON, zearalenone), the product maintained growth performance and feed conversion at a level comparable to the uncontaminated control. In dairy cows, an in vivo reduction in the concentration of aflatoxin M1 in milk has been demonstrated.
Unike®
Powerful protection against a broad spectrum of mycotoxins
Unike® combines adsorption and bioinactivation to cover a broad spectrum of mycotoxins — aflatoxins, zearalenone, ochratoxin A, DON, T-2/HT-2 and fumonisins. In an in vivo study in boars fed zearalenone-contaminated feed, Unike® demonstrated significant detoxifying action and preserved reproductive performance. Efficacy has additionally been demonstrated in fattening pigs and poultry under multi-contamination scenarios.
Unike® Plus Nat
Maximum protection with herbal extracts and vitamin C
Good health is the foundation of profitable livestock farming — especially in animals that stay in the herd for a long time. Unike® Plus Nat adds specialised herbal extracts and vitamin C to the mechanisms of Unike® for complete organ protection. In an independent peer-reviewed in vivo study in dairy cows, a significant reduction in the transfer of aflatoxin M1 into milk was demonstrated. Intended for animals with a long productive life — breeding animals, dairy cows, layers, sows, sheep and goats, in which the cumulative effect of mycotoxins is most pronounced.
Two mechanisms of action — one complete solution
Modern mycotoxin binders do not work through physical binding alone. Adisseo combines two different mechanisms to cover the full spectrum of the threat:
Adsorption
The toxins bind physically to an indigestible mineral matrix (sequestering clay) and pass through the gastrointestinal tract without being absorbed by the animal.
Bioinactivation
The chemical structure of the toxin is enzymatically transformed into a less toxic and more easily excretable metabolite — especially important for toxins that are poorly adsorbed.
Immune protection
The normal immune response — suppressed by mycotoxins — is restored and the organ systems function fully.
Antioxidant protection
Active management of oxidative stress — the liver, GIT and kidneys are protected from damage.
Proven in vivo — what the studies show
Efficacy has been confirmed in independent in vivo studies under real farming conditions. Expand for details.
In an independent peer-reviewed study in dairy cows fed feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1, the addition of sequestering agents (clay minerals + inactivated yeast) was found to significantly reduce the concentration of aflatoxin M1 in milk. Toxy-Nil® and Unike® Plus Nat demonstrate effective adsorption of the aflatoxin in the gastrointestinal tract and limit its transfer below the EU statutory limit of 0.05 µg/kg.
Adisseo — Feed additives containing sequestrant clay minerals and inactivated yeast reduce aflatoxin excretion in milk of dairy cows (peer-reviewed)
In an in vivo study in boars fed zearalenone-contaminated feed, Unike® demonstrated significant detoxifying action. The additive neutralises the negative reproductive effects of zearalenone and helps preserve the normal physiological parameters of the semen.
Adisseo — Effects of zearalenone and product Unike on physiological responses of boar semen (in vivo)
In a field trial in broilers fed maize naturally contaminated with aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol and zearalenone, Toxy-Nil® maintained growth performance, feed conversion and the birds' health status at a level comparable to the uncontaminated control — confirming its efficacy under real multi-contamination conditions.

Why Adisseo — what sets them apart from the competition
There are many toxin binders on the market. Here's why Adisseo's products stand apart:
Two mechanisms, not one
Most competing products rely on adsorption alone. Adisseo combines adsorption with and enzymatic bioinactivation — covering the toxins that mineral clays cannot retain (DON, T-2, fumonisins).
In vivo, not just in vitro
Many products show good results in the test tube. Adisseo backs its claims with independent peer-reviewed in vivo trials in real animals — in broilers, boars and dairy cows — under real multi-contamination conditions.
Three precisely differentiated levels
Instead of one universal product for everything, Adisseo offers three clearly distinct levels — Toxy-Nil® for moderate risk, Unike® for broad spectrum, and Unike® Plus Nat for animals with a long productive life. You pay for exactly what you need.
Specific protection of milk
Toxy-Nil® is the only product in the line positioned and proven specifically against aflatoxin M1 in milk — a problem of growing regulatory weight in Bulgaria and the EU, on which most competitors offer only general claims.
85+ years of research behind the product
Adisseo is a world leader in feed additives with over 85 years of experience. The products are not rebranded generics — they are developed, tested and improved by in-house research teams with published scientific results.
Organ systems, not just toxins
Unike® Plus Nat acts not only at the level of binding and bioinactivation, but also actively supports the liver, GIT, kidneys and immune system — protection that most competing products do not offer.
Results from practice
Livestock farmers using Adisseo's products share real improvements in their herds.
After introducing Toxy-Nil® in our dairy herd, the aflatoxin M1 test in the milk returned to normal within just 2 weeks. We avoided a tanker rejection and the loss that would have followed.
We had reproduction problems in our sows — low fertility, small litters. After switching to Unike®, the situation normalised. We now use it continuously in the breeding herd.
We work with maize from different suppliers and contamination levels vary. Toxy-Nil® gives us peace of mind — broiler feed conversion stays stable even in bad seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Adsorption is a physical process — the toxin attaches to the surface of an indigestible mineral matrix (usually a sequestering clay) and is excreted with the faeces without being absorbed. It works well for polar molecules such as aflatoxins and ochratoxin A. Bioinactivation is an enzymatic process — the chemical structure of the toxin is transformed into less harmful metabolites. This is the only effective way to deal with toxins such as DON, T-2/HT-2 and fumonisins, which are poorly adsorbed. Adisseo's products combine both mechanisms.
Aflatoxin M1 in milk is a consequence of aflatoxin B1 intake through feed. The only effective solution is to limit the absorption of AFB1 in the cow's gastrointestinal tract. Toxy-Nil® and Unike® Plus Nat are proven in vivo to reduce the concentration of aflatoxin M1 in milk by binding AFB1 before it is absorbed. The EU regulatory limit is 0.05 µg/kg — exceeding it leads to rejection of the entire batch. Contact us for advice if an exceedance has been detected.
In pigs, the main threats are zearalenone (reproductive problems, especially in sows) and DON (feed refusal, reduced intake). Pigs are more sensitive to DON than poultry — bioinactivation is essential. At standard risk and for fattening pigs, Unike® is the good choice. For breeding animals — sows and boars — we recommend Unike® Plus Nat because of their longer productive use and greater cumulative toxin load.
Yes — and this is precisely the strength of Adisseo's products. Real feeds are rarely contaminated with a single toxin. Toxy-Nil® has been tested and proven under multi-contamination (AFB1 + DON + zearalenone) in broilers. Unike® and Unike® Plus Nat cover a broader spectrum, including bioinactivation of the toxins for which adsorption is insufficient.
Non-selective adsorbents (e.g. activated charcoal) can also bind nutrients. Adisseo's products are formulated with high-quality sequestering clays and inactivated yeast whose specificity is directed primarily at mycotoxins. At the correct dosage, the negative impact on the digestibility of vitamins and minerals is minimal.
Unike® Plus Nat is recommended for animals with a long productive life — dairy cows, breeding sows and boars, layers, sheep and goats. These animals are exposed to mycotoxins over months and years and accumulate cumulative damage to the liver, reproductive system and immunity that does not appear in fattening animals. The additional herbal extracts in Unike® Plus Nat actively support organ function in these animals.
